With rising tensions, the US Department of Commerce has taken important actions against Chinese companies that provide artificial intelligence (AI) chips for China’s military growth. Four Chinese enterprises were subject to limitations from the US Department of Commerce, as The Times of India reported. Four new firms, Linkzol (Beijing) Technologies Co., Xi’an Like Innovative Information Technology Co., Beijing Anwise Technology Co., and SITONHOLY (Tianjin) Co., were added to the Entity List this week by the Commerce Department, increasing the total number of new entries to 11.
Preventative Measures by the US Government
The objective of the list of entities is to safeguard against unauthorized access to important American products and technologies. Also to block the transfer of US technology to China for its military programs, the US has increased restrictions on the export of advanced semiconductors and chip-making machinery to that country.
Kevin Kurland, a customs control official, reportedly told Reuters that the companies that were blacklisted buying AI chips from the US for use in military projects in China. Getting on this list severely limits these Chinese enterprises’ access to American technology and goods.
Response from China to additional US limitations on companies
The Chinese government has denied this allegation and said that the US is trying to stop Chinese firms. Chinese Foreign Ministry representative Mao Ning said that the US is trying to “contain and suppress” Chinese companies.
In addition to this, the US has imposed restrictions on five other companies that have been accused of promoting drone production and acquisition for Russia’s involvement in the conflict in Ukraine and Iranian actions in the Red Sea. The Times of India has reported that among these five companies was Jiangxi Xintuo Enterprise Co which was a Chinese company that was assumed to be backing Russia’s drone program, and the vast number of network companies providing the drone components to Iran.
In conclusion, the recent developments underestimate the complications of the economic and geopolitical relations between the two major superpowers and look at the increasing tensions between the US and China.
